The CDI controls the spark rate to the spark plug, and so can have a dramatic effect upon performance. If your machine is hard to start, missing a beat, not revving out fully, making a popping sound or, at worse, banging sound, you may need a new one. CDIs are also responsible for a complete loss of spark at the plug.
